Citizens Outraged After Another Gas Leak Causes Townwide Total Blackout
The Haven Municipal Works Department is under fire from enraged citizens this week after a misrouting of industrial compounds beneath downtown Haven led to a dangerous mixture of gases being released into the air.
Residents who inhaled the air tainted by the gases—including methane, carbon monoxide, and several others—immediately blacked out for several hours and then awoke confused, often behind the wheel of their car, in the street, or wherever they happened to be when they first inhaled the gases. Though the mixture of gases dissipated quickly and no serious injuries were reported, the frequency of issues with the city's gas lines has many citizens seriously concerned.
"This is getting downright ridiculous," said Grace Cooper, a Haven resident who is currently collecting signatures on a petition demanding the resignation of the Haven Municipal Works Director. "It seems like every two weeks its some new problem over there. It's a mysterious gas leak, or a methane cloud, or some backed-up sewage line that means half the town gets sick. I just don't feel safe. It's gotten to the point where I feel like I have to make my kids wear surgical masks while we are out-and-about in town. Something has to be done—we need someone out there that knows what they are doing."
As a result of the leak—the third potentially dangerous gas-related issue in as many months —the Haven Police Department will be commissioning an independent evaluation of the city's infrastructure. Local contractor Dwight Hendrickson, who is often responsible for cleaning up after these problems, is a leading candidate for heading the analysis.
"I say it all the time, the town's only as strong as its infrastructure," Hendrickson said. "I know that everyone wants to keep Haven safe and idyllic: the Haven that we all love. But this town is growing—whether we like it or not—and with growth like that we're going to have to make some serious changes, starting with the roots of this city."
Following the investigation and an analysis of the findings, the independent committee will submit corresponding reports to the county and state boards requesting additional funding should said funding be deemed neccessary by proposed retrofits and upgrades.

Winter Recreation League Sign-Ups Starting Soon
Continuing its decades-long commitment to keeping Haven healthy and happy, the Haven Athletic Center will be opening up registration for this winter's recreational sports leagues. Featured winter sports for all ages this year include hockey, indoor soccer, and, of course, basketball. According to The Haven Athletic Center's head of recruitment and marketing Director, David Browne, everyone is hoping to attract more athletes 35 and older this year to round out some leagues.
"Last year, there were a lot of fun matches between some really talented athletes. But let's be honest, some leagues and age groups were a little more interesting than others," Browne said. "Last year we only had two full teams in men's adult basketball—we got to do better than that. The North Haven Rams won the championship, but the East Haven Demons didn't even have five players show up, so they had to borrow players from the other team. That's why we're hosting an aggressive fitness drive this year—more players means more teams and more fun for everyone."
In the interest of full disclosure, the editors would like to note that David Browne served last season as captain of the East Haven Demons—league runners up.
